Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Troubleshooting Guide for Windows: Causes, Error Codes, and Step-by-Step Fixes

Getting hit by a blue screen

A blue screen of death is Windows doing a full stop. One second everything is fine, then the screen goes blue and it restarts like nothing happened. That part is what makes it so annoying. You do not even know what caused it yet.

So I start with the only clue Windows gives us, the stop code. It looks scary but it is basically a label. It points toward drivers, memory, storage, or system files. From there it turns into a simple process. Recreate the crash if possible, change one thing at a time, and watch what changes.

We will grab the stop code and any driver name shown on the screen. Then we check recent updates, new devices, and anything that changed right before the crashes started. After that I narrow it down. Is it a bad driver, overheating, failing RAM, or a disk problem. Once you isolate it, fixes get way less random.

Quick ending

Blue screens feel dramatic but most of them come from a small set of causes. If you keep calm and follow the clues step by step, you usually land on the real problem instead of guessing forever.
