How to Fix the GRUB Rescue Prompt After a Windows Update: Restore GRUB and Boot Linux Again

Getting hit with grub rescue after a Windows update

You reboot after a Windows update and boom, instead of your normal menu you get that black screen that says grub rescue. It feels like the computer just forgot Linux exists. I’d be sitting there thinking, ok, nothing is “broken” in my files, it’s just the boot part that got messed up. Windows updates can rewrite the bootloader stuff, especially on dual boot setups, and GRUB ends up pointing at the wrong place or not loading at all.

The goal is pretty simple. Get back into a working system, find where Linux is installed, then reinstall GRUB so it shows up again like before. It sounds scary at first because the screen looks harsh and empty. But most of the time it’s fixable without wiping anything.

Quick ending

Once GRUB is back in charge, the normal boot menu returns and both Windows and Linux show up again. The annoying part is getting knocked into this mess by an update. The good part is you can usually recover it in one session if you stay calm and follow the steps.
