Last night I let my younger sibling use my laptop and when I got back I noticed both Google.com and Facebook.com fail to load, and I also had new miscellaneous third-party runescape programs on my desktop [IMG].

I'm currently running McAfee, after the scan is complete I'll post a HijackThis log here.

You have asked Firefox to connect
securely to facebook.com, but we can't confirm that your connection is secure.

Normally, when you try to connect securely,
sites will present trusted identification to prove that you are
going to the right place. However, this site's identity can't be verified.

    What Should I Do?

    If you usually connect to
this site without problems, this error could mean that someone is
trying to impersonate the site, and you shouldn't continue.

    Technical Details

facebook.com uses an invalid security certificate.

The certificate is not trusted because it is self-signed.
The certificate is only valid for My Name

    (Error code: sec_error_untrusted_issuer)

    I Understand the Risks

If you understand what's going on, you
can tell Firefox to start trusting this site's identification.
Even if you trust the site, this error could mean that someone is
    tampering with your connection.

    Don't add an exception unless
you know there's a good reason why this site doesn't use trusted identification.

Taz, I did the steps listen in that thread. I found the infected file during a system scan, quarantined it, and removed it but it still didn't resolve my issue. Here's my HijackThis log

Hi BeastFromTheNE, Grate you got them off. My next step would be to run CCleaner and clear all temporary internet files from your machine. Also do a registry fix using the same program. (Please backup the registry when asked!). Then reset you internet explorer in control panel. See if it works now. If not don't panic theres a few more things up my sleeve yet.

Well I'll be damned Taz, I believe the hosts file is our problem! Here it is:

    Code:
    # Copyright (c) 1993-2009 Microsoft Corp.
    #
    # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
    #
    # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
    # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
    # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
    # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
    # space.
    #
    # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
    # lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
    #
    # For example:
    #
    # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
    # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

    # localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.

Bingo, All you need is this

    # 127.0.0.1 localhost
    #    ::1            localhost
